Of all the thing we expected. Listening to a Portuguese Guitarist play John Denver songs outside our hotel wasnt even in our ball park. West Virginia take me home indeed.
Arrived after a grueling day of flights and travel, exhausted but eager for adventure. Our first day started out strong as encountered a group of Ultra fans of the Swiss football club Young Boys, marching towards the Porto FC stadium for a European cup game that night.
After checking into our hotel (and drinking our complementary glass of Port of course) we set of for an adventure in the nightlife of this vibrant city! Of course right in front of our hotel a street preformer from Brazil had attracted quite a crowd and so we immediately abandoned our adventure and loitered at the street side cafe to listen to her sing. Drinking the famous Portuguese green wine, as we were serenaded with Portuguese classics like Toxic by Brittney Spears, Bang Bang I shot you down and of course Take me Home, Country roads. Finishing the day off with a plate of wild boar, and catching the soccer game at a bar, our first impression of Porto was strong.
The next day has cemented that in our minds, from grazing appetizers, wine and of course the famous local cod, to a tour of one of the Port cellars. This is a beautiful, vibrant city. With gorgeous views of the hills and rivers, architectural marvels like the Eiffle style bridge. The people are friendly and welcoming, with a strong sense of fasion and unfailingly polite. YoOu could spend a month here and not see all this City has to offer. Sadly we only had the one day to spare, tomorrow we set off from Porto to the beach side town of Mindelo. A 17 KM, 11 mile, hike along the coast.
Country roads, take me home. To the place, I belong. Santiago.
